Sovereignty and Calamity
by Pastor Chuck, Mon, Dec 7th, 2009On this day of remembrance, the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, we must not forget that God is sovereign in all things.
Amos 3:6 reads: "If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it?"
We so easily forget that God governs the calamities of all men in all places. To assert otherwise is to divest God of His omnipotence. Unfortunately, we as mere men all to often believe we can divest God of His very nature - sovereign omnipotence. How absurd.
We are the creatures, He is the creator. He is the potter and we are the clay. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 9: 20-22
20 "But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, "Why have you made me like this?" 21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
22 What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,..."
We would do well to remember that God is longsuffering but at times shows His "wrath" and makes known "His power". Humble men tremble at these thoughts. Stiff-necked, pride-filled, arogant sinners scoff at such notions. Which will you be?
